The XM Satellite Radio company is owned by Sirius XM Holdings Inc., which is headquartered in Midtown Manhattan, New York City. Clear Channel Communications has an investment in the company, but the company"s radio services are operated by XM Satellite Radio Holdings.
XM offers more than 170 digital audio channels on a number of satellites, as well as a ground transmitter that supplements the satellite signal in urban areas. Currently, the satellites transmit on a frequency band of 2332.5 to 2345.0 MHz. Depending on the signal quality, there are up to 800 repeater sites around the United States.
XM"s satellites and terrestrial repeaters work together to provide gap-free coverage of the contiguous U.S. and Canada. XM broadcasts the signal of Clear Channel in the bandwidth that is used by other programming, including commercial advertising on existing music channels. Its terrestrial repeaters compensate for the loss of signal, and it"s the XM ground transmitter that carries a full-power signal in urban areas.
XM"s radio service is available Monday through Friday from 8 am to 8 pm Eastern Time. To activate your XM Radio, you can use the XM Radio ID, ESN, or RadioID. XM also has a web-based form you can fill out to submit your question.
XM"s broadcasting was designed to give users gap-free coverage, so the company uses a combination of high-powered satellites and ground-based repeaters to reach listeners. However, the number of terrestrial repeaters has decreased since XM launched its service in 2001.
XM"s satellites transmit digital music at up to 320 kbit/s, while the ground-based transmitters carry the signal to listeners. XM"s digital audio channels are compressed using the MPEG-1 Layer II format. Several codecs are utilized by XM to provide users with high-quality audio. These include the aacPlus codec from Coding Technologies, the AMBE codec from Digital Voice Systems, and the CT-aacPlus codec from Coding Technology.
XM was founded in the late 1980s by a group of people who were originally focused on satellite broadcasting of telephone signals. Initially, the company was owned by several organizations. In 1999, XM merged with American Mobile Satellite Corporation, which was a spin-off from another organization. During this time, the companies agreed to concessions to avoid price increases and stifling competition.
Despite the company"s positive reputation, some consumers complain that the quality of customer service is poor. Often, wait times are long, and agents fail to follow through on their promises. Fortunately, there"s an Unresolved Issue link on the company"s website. When this doesn"t help, you can call the company"s customer support center.
In 2010, the Ohio Attorney General began an investigation into complaints about the company. Several third-party developers received cease-and-desist letters from the XM company.
